The Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds in Fresno, California play in the PacWest Conference in NCAA DII and are coached by CJ Haydock. I was the team manager of The Master’s University Mustangs in the GSAC in NAIA DI from 2010-14 and the Sunbirds were in the GSAC during that time.
I was at The League put on by Compton Magic last year at Orange Lutheran High School and enjoyed chatting with FPU Sunbirds assistant coach Daniel Dyck. One player I am looking forward to keeping up with for the Sunbirds is 6’6″ senior forward Aamondae Coleman.
Through his junior season with the Sunbirds, he has averaged 13.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists while shooting 54% from the field, 33.8% from deep and 65.7% from the free throw line per game.
He has scored 1,127 points, grabbed 467 rebounds, dished out 52 assists, had 37 steals, blocked 21 shots and made 78 threes.
In each of his 3 seasons with the Sunbirds, he averaged at least 9.2 points per game, scored at least 248 points, grabbed at leas 134 rebounds, dished out at least 10 assists, had at least 9 steals and made at least 19 threes.
In his first game of the 2020-21 campaign against San Jose State University Spartans, he had 30 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 three.
I would like to thank Aamondae for participating in my series of sharing basketball player journeys to their various colleges on my blog The Cannon Network.
In sharing his journey with me, he wrote, “My journey to FPU was not conventional at all. Out of high school I committed to the Air Force Academy and attended the prep school for a year.
Things didn’t work out there, so I left after my prep year and too a visit to FPU and I love how sincere and real the coaches were. I was a little skeptical of FPU at first, but I definitely love it here now. The relationship I have with all the coaches is unbreakable and getting stronger by the day.
The thing I like most about FPU is how nice everyone is on campus, my teammates included. I’ve built some friendships that will last forever with my teammates, they’re really my brothers now.
The thing I’ve worked on most since I’ve been at FPU I’d say is my leadership skills and my shooting skills. I try to always stay in the gym and shoot as often as I can because I know that my shooting can always improve.
When it comes to leadership, I had some great teammates I looked up to my fresh man year who were seniors. They were great leaders and helped me by always carrying themselves with great leadership traits. I love it here at FPU and look forward to having an amazing season this year!”
