THE CANNON NETWORK

I’d like to thank Michael Dominguez who is the latest basketball coach or player to share their basketball journey with me. He shared, “My name is Michael Dominguez and I am an assistant women’s basketball coach at South Mountain Community College.

Additionally, I am the Director or Player Development and Recruiting. My coaching journey is relatively short so far. I feel extremely blessed to have had a small marginal amount of success this far into my coaching career. I got my first coaching job at Ironwood Ride High School, located in Tucson, Arizona.

Ironwood Ridge was where I graduated from and played high school basketball at. I quickly got involved in the AAU season, coaching with Powerhouse Hoops Tucson.

After one season, I was blessed to receive a better job offer at Ironwood High School, in Glendale, AZ. I was also asked to coach with the Powerhouse Hoops UAA team.

These two seasons provided me with a ton of experience and surrounded me with great mentors. Getting to coach alongside Jordan Augustine (Ironwood HS) was by far the most impactful thing of my entire journey.

He really taught me how to be a great coach and man. He really focused on getting me ready to coach college ball, as he knew my eventual goal was to get to a D1 university.

I spent one season there before getting a job offer at South Mountain Community College. I am very thankful for Coach Byron Jackson, as he gave me my first college coaching job and has given me a ton of opportunities to prove myself as a coach. My goal is to move up the coaching ladder as soon as possible.

If I could give any young coaches advice, I’d say surround yourself with great coaches and make connections. Be a student of the game. The dumbest mistake you can make is thinking you know everything about coaching. Someone will always know more than you, learn from them. Continue working hard and your goals will eventually happen.”
