Omar Sanchez was the head coach of the Holy Names University Hawks in Oakland, California. The Hawks play in the PacWest Conference in NCAA DII. He is now an assistant coach for the CSUEB Pioneers in Hayward, California in the CCAA in NCAA DII. Here are the pieces of advice coach Sanchez has for young coaches. 1. Understand your purpose as a coach and for the most part it is to serve others. 2. 2% of what you see is the end result, the other 98% of coaching is grinding, so you must love the 98%. 3. Be a sponge when you start, as only then you can really be a contributor to a program. 4. Always bring something to the table. For every 1 “yes” you will get 25 no’s. Don’t be discouraged. 5. Lastly, your sole job as an assistant coach is to make the head coach look good.
