Brant Minor is an assistant coach for the Pacific University Boxers in Forest Grove, Oregon who play in the NWC and he founded and runs Max Hoops which provides high school basketball players to be seen and to learn from college basketball coaches at each level. Here is Brant’s advice for young players: “Your body language speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what you’re saying. As a college coach, I walk in the gym and that’s the first thing I notice. I think players would be surprised if they knew how little their actual basketball ability is what I base my recruitment on. I like to see a potential recruit handle adversity. Every coach likes when they show up and the kid they’re watching goes for 30, and I do also. However, I also like seeing how a player reacts when their shot’s aren’t falling or their team is getting beat. It’s easy to look good and be a quality teammate when things are going your way. I also like seeing summer games, when a player has to play two or three games in the same day. I notice how the player acts during timeouts and between quarters. One major turnoff is if a player isn’t locked in on their coach. Young players need to practice focusing and maintaining eye contact throughout. ”
