I am thankful that coaches and players have shared about their journeys in the sports world as well as advice for young coaches and players. Here is Jake Taylor’s journey and advice in the baseball world. Jake is the head coach for the LCSC Warriors men’s baseball team in Lewiston, Idaho in the CCC in NAIA. I was the team manager of The Master’s University Mustangs men’s basketball team when Leif Karlberg was a guard on the team. He is an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team for the Warriors. Here is what coach Taylor shared with The Cannon Network.

“I have coached at nearly every level from youth, high school (both male and female), and now as a college head coach.  I believe my transformation has gone from one of an eager young coach that began coaching to win games, move further in the sport, and to make a name for myself.  I coached exactly the way that I was coached and it never really fit my personality.  Even though I was intense and demanding I began to feel that I was missing out on the most important aspects that I feel are now the main focus in my coaching.  That is the interpersonal relationships with coaching staffs and team members, learning life lessons along the way and creating shared memories and bonds that people will have forever.

My main focuses now revolve around character success, academic success, and then success on the diamond in that particular order.  Of course I still possess a burning desire to win at everything but that message routinely revolves around making wise choices off the field, understanding that the people around you make you who you are, being selfless as a team member, positive self-talk, ensuring daily actions are in line with long term goals, paying attention to detail in all aspects of your life, and making sure the most important things remain the most important things.  I feel when an individual works on their integrity daily, focuses on their schoolwork, then baseball becomes much much easier.”
