Markel Leonard played for the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, California the and Lewis and Clark College Pioneers in Portland, Oregon. As a Pioneer, Markel averaged 10.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.1 blocks while shooting 37.7% from the field, 32% from deep and 77.4% from the free throw line and he made 73 threes.  Here is Markel’s advice for young players: “Junior/Seniors: go where you’re wanted. There are levels of college basketball for everyone. Don’t blow off an opportunity to go D1 or live the D1 dream when a lot of great D2 D3 NAIA schools are calling for your services. Don’t believe the hype. Always be real with yourself and where your skill set fits on the different levels in collegiate athletics. There’s nothing wrong with going to those levels. Go where are wanted because everyone’s journey is different. Everyone’s path is different. We all aren’t going to the NBA. But we all can compete at a high level and be the best student athletes that we can be while getting high quality educations. During your recruiting process take your time. Don’t rush. Make a calculated, well thought out decision. Make the right choice for you. Not for your mom, dad, girlfriend etc. Attend the School that best fits your academic standards first and satisfies your athletic standards (playing time, player development, coaching style, playing style, team chemistry, etc).”
