I’D LIKE TO THANK TIM GODLEY WHO IS THE HEAD COACH FOR BONITA HIGH SCHOOL BEARCATS IN LA VERNE, CALIFORNIA FOR SHARING ADVICE FOR YOUNG COACHES WITH THE CANNON NETWORK. HE WAS AN ASSISTANT COACH FOR THE MASTER’S UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS IN SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA IN THE GSAC IN NAIA WHEN I WAS TEAM MANAGER UNDER THEN HEAD COACH CHUCK MARTIN. COACH GODLEY SHARED, “BECOME A PLANNER. MAKE A PLAY FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. FOR PRACTICE, HAVE AN OUTLINE OF WHAT DRILLS/COMPONENTS YOU DO. THEN MAKE A WEEKLY MATRIX FOR PRACTICE. I MAP OUR 5 DAYS AND ROTATE WHAT WE DO IN PRACTICE. HOLD A PRESEASON PARENT MEETING. IN THAT MEETING, EXPLAIN THAT “PLAYER SELECTION” AND “PLAYING TIME” ARE NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION. PROVIDE SCHEDULES AND OTHER EXPECTATIONS. ATTEND TEAM CAMPS IN THE SUMMER AND HAVE A TEAM BUILDING EVENT IN THE FALL.”
