Tommy Strine is an assistant coach for the IUPUI Jaguars in Indianapolis, Indiana in the Horizon League in NCAA DI coached by Matt Crenshaw after being an assistant coach for the Chicago State University Cougars in Chicago, Illinois in the WAC in NCAA DI coached by Lance Irvin. He was the Director of Operations for the Lamar University Cardinals men’s basketball team for sharing advice for young coaches with me. He served a similar role with the Cleveland State University Vikings and American University Eagles. I’d like to thank coach Strine for sharing advice with The Cannon Network. “As I think about what advice to give young coaches, I think the biggest one is to build genuine, organic relationships. A lot of young coaches go out of there way to have too many “contacts” I have learned over time that the way you get jobs and succeed in this business is to have a small circle that you trust and that you can confide in. Those are the guys that will be in your corner for you when you really need it. Ultimately, you’re going to get hired based on relationships, and working for and with the right people is more important in this business than anything. Continue to network but remember that your inner circle is more important than anything.”
